From hidden-gems to places to people-watch, from bookshops to beauty spots – here is some inspiration, celebrating the independents in our local neighbourhoods around the world.
This week’s selection has been curated by Matthew Needham, a multi-award-winning British/Czech artist, who is known for his approach to upcycling and contributions to sustainability within the British fashion industry.
Needham moved to London and secured his place on the BA (Hons) Fashion: Womenswear course at Central Saint Martins, before going on to work for global fashion houses Louis Vuitton and Chanel in Paris, France where he honed his skills of craftsmanship and construction. His latest work champions a new viewpoint of how we look at clothing, paying particular attention to material innovation and sustainable storytelling.
FOR FOOD
“It’s got to be Mildreds, London. It is a staple for vegans, an absolute must.”
FOR PEOPLE-WATCHING
“The Barbican Centre. The brutalist architecture reminds me of Prague where my family is from, and the green room is the best part (when it's open!).”
FOR BOOKS
“A lot of my time was spent at The Central Saint Martins Library as a student.”
FOR WELLNESS
“Being outside in nature is something I value after spending most of my time in the city.”
FOR SHOPPING
“For vintage clothing; Paris. For charity shop gems, it has to be London.”
